HOTTEST TRENDS THIS SEASON: SKIRT AND DRESSES OVER PANTS

The traditional Asian trouser suit consists of slim trousers, capri pants or shalwars paired with a kameez, tunic or even a mini dress, with a dupatta. While the style has been embraced by Eastern culture for centuries, we are seeing an increasing interest in the trend in the West.

Nowadays, the trouser suit can be seen as an ensemble embracing Eastern and Western fashion influences in a modern elegant attire. One thing is evident, the trouser suit has made a memorable entrance in mainstream fashion and is here to stay for a while.

The look has gained considerable popularity among celebrities, including Emma Watson, who looked ravishing in her red Dior dress paired with black slim trousers at the Golden Globes Awards 2014. As you can see even though the concept originates in Asia, designers nowadays interpret it in many different ways to give it a Western definition.

Dior has embraced the dress/trouser pair and this is reflected strongly in their AW14 collection. However, it feels the metallic dress and black trousers are far away from the Asian aesthetic of delicate beadings, bright colours and rich layering.

The style has made a smooth transition from the catwalk, to the red carpet, to street style. Among the fashion icons who love pairing trousers and skirts is author Leandra Medine.

Luckily, we can safely say we are a step ahead on this trend and have been rocking the dress/skirt over pants look for a long time!

After great debates in the office we managed to settle on our top 3 iconic Indian fashion styles that we absolutely adore!

From left to right:

  1. Parineeti Chopra in Pankaj and Nidhi at A Random Desi Romance premiere at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival, photo by Jason Merritt. We love this style because of the asymmetric high-low kurta that gives it a modest, yet fashion forward look.
  2. Manish Malhotra’s collections never cease to amaze. This vintage looking A-line dress paired with shiny trousers is a style that struck us as it plays with cultures and epochs, and in that it becomes more contemporary than ever. The vintage influence in fashion has made a strong case this season!
  3. Kiram Uttam Ghosh’s AW14 collection is simply stunning. Traditionally autumn colours are associated with palettes in orange, green, brown and navy. However, Kiram gave autumn a new meaning with bronze and gold paired with a dusty rose hue. Needless to say, we are in love with this style. The modern Western layering and statement jewellry radiate a powerful luxe look.

So, whether or not you’re Asian you can safely put on a pair of slim trousers and slip on a tunic for those summer days. Here are a few of our fave pieces from the new Raishma SS 14 collection that perfectly encompass the East-West fusion seen on the red carpet and catwalk.

The yellow tunic with grey slim trousers can easily take you from work to evening events.
